Alvar Aalto, dormitorio MIT, Boston, USA, 1947-1949

Alvar Aalto (3 February 1898 – 11 May 1976) was a Finnish architect and designer. Aalto’s design approach is mainly close to functionalism and organic architecture, his favorite materials are wood and brick and his buildings fit harmoniously into the landscape.

In 1946, while he was a professor at the MIT – Massachussets Institute of Technology, he designed the Baker House where the dormitory is located. This building was the first building of his red brick’s period.

When he designed this building, Aalto wished to maximize the view of the Charles River for every student. This explains why he refused to design north-facing rooms. Instead of rooms, there is a stairway system on the north side of the building. However, a single-sided building would not be large enough to contain a sufficient number of rooms, which is why Aalto needed to find ways to improve the density of rooms in the building. This is why he chose to design a sinuous-curved building, which explains why there is a wide variety of room shapes.
